On 7 January the Libyan National Army forces declared they took control over the city of Sirte, which has a particular symbolism in Libya’s recent history, having been the stronghold of the Gheddafi regime and later on the capital of the Islamic State organisation’s “Tripoli Province” (January 2015 – November 2016).
Drawing on our consolidated expertise on Libya, and basing on recent MEDirections publications such as ‘The City in the Middle: Fragile Stability and Future Opportunities in Libya’s Sirte’ (December 2019), in this podcast we try to highlight the implications and factors of such a military gain.
