MEDirections is delighted to share a new Research Project Report from the Syria Transition Challenges Project, part of the Syria Initiative. This paper was originally published in Arabic on 19 October 2020. It is now available in English.
In Syria’s context of political authoritarianism, analysis of the People’s Council elections remains crucial to understand how the Syrian regime is reshaping its social base in each of the 15 electoral districts that comprise the geographical map of the country.
Based on official sources and first-hand information on the profiles of the 250 MPs elected in July 2020, this research paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the composition of the new parliament, considering it an expression of the power structures in Syria today.
