Conducting Social Science Research in Risky Environments

This one-day workshop aims to discuss new trends in social science research carried out in risky contexts, the challenges posed to the safety and security of researchers and informants, as well as the impact of these trends and challenges on knowledge production.

It will gather a group of experienced researchers from a number of European universities and institutions who carry out fieldwork in challenging environments (because of the subject of their research and/or of the regions in which they conduct their fieldwork).

The workshop endeavours to provide a space to discuss the constraints, risks and challenges of conducting research in risky environments, as well as to share experiences and ideas with the aim of reaching consensus on best practice.

The workshop will be structured as an informal roundtable, which will be initiated by a welcome from the EUI President and an introductory session to present a set of questions that will later guide the discussions. A tour de table will introduce the researchers present and their experiences, before initiating the informal discussion, which will take an academic as well as practical approach.

Virginie Collombier | European University Institute
