Virginie Collombier (EUI), Agnès Favier (EUI), Yahya Alkubaisi (Iraqi Centre for Strategic Studies) and Thomas Husken (University of Lucerne) describe the main points discussed in the one-day workshop on “TRIBES AND GLOBAL JIHADISM”, held in Florence on 27 February 2018. The workshop aimed to refresh the analysis adopted in the book “Tribes and Global Jihadism” (Hurst, 2017) edited by Virginie Collombier and Olivier Roy. Presentations on Syria, Iraq and Libya by some of the main collaborators of MEDirections, with direct experience on the ground, uncovered fresh field research analysis and stimulated an open debate on the role of tribes and on further research axes.
