Abdullah Al-Jabassini is a PhD candidate of International Relations at the University of Kent in Brussels, Belgium, He is also a researcher at the Middle East Directions Programme of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies.  His general research interests include wartime institutions and social orders, civilian-combatant interactions, and civilian agency with a focus on theorizing civil resistance to rebel organizations. Based on years of field research, Al-Jabassini’s doctoral research develops a theory that aims to investigate the role tribalism plays in determining the form of wartime social order, and in shaping rebel governance. The research also investigates the impact tribalism has on the wide-ranging civilian behaviours towards rebel groups, primarily in Dar’a province, southern Syria.
