The workshop takes the recent publication Tribes and Global Jihadism, edited by Virginie Collombier and Olivier Roy (Hurst, 2017) as a springboard for more broader discussions on the theme of tribes and jihadism after Islamic State.

The workshop aims to refresh the analysis adopted in the book, with presentations by the book’s editors as well as from some of the main collaborators of MEDirections from Syria, Iraq and Libya. With direct experience on the ground, these latter presentations uncover fresh field research analysis. The presentations will be followed by an open discussion.

A lecture by Yvan Guichaoua (Brussels School of International Studies), addressing Violent Jihad and Counter-terrorism, and how tribal relations are reshaped in Northern Mali, will kick off the discussions. The lecture takes place from 17:00-19:00 on 26 February in the Sala del Capitolo (Badia).
